USEC (USU +4.7%) says it will begin stopping uranium enrichment at the end of this month after failing to conclude a deal with the U.S. Department of Energy for an extension of enrichment at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Kentucky. The plant is the only U.S.-owned and operated uranium enrichment facility in the U.S.

Doubt that. Obama appointed a very pro nuclear DOE chief about a year back. The shut down was more than likely to be a USEC idea, since demand is low and they won't be responsible for clean up, with that falling to the DOE. I read an article in January that specified this was the plan.

This appears to have been imminent. This was using out-dated technology that still could produce but was not using Centrifuge technology like they are in Piketon. The question is what is DOE going to do with it with it and it's outdated technology? Sell it to the Russians? And yes, shedding the cost of cleanup a big plus for USEC.
