For the first time since 1988, the Big 3 Detroit automakers gain U.S. market share, picking up 47.2% of sales vs. 45.1% in 2010. For perspective, in 1988 the 3 owned 73.1% of the market. The challenge now is keeping those gains as Japan comes back from the earthquake that surely contributed to 2011's result.
