A "significant restructuring" may be afoot at Microsoft (MSFT) sources tell AllThingsD, as changes designed to simplify the company's organizational structure and "configure the company around devices and services" are in the works. Expanded roles for several executives including the presidents of the Servers and Tools, Skype Communications, and Interactive Entertainment divisions may be in the cards, although the details of the shuffle could "change substantively" going forward. Nomura cites shareholder pressure as a factor in the potential shakeup.

I have a bold idea. How about the restructuring starts at THE TOP. Steveb should switch jobs with Jeff Raikes (who runs Bill & Melinda Foundation). That way Steve can learn some humanity whilst at the same time MSFT can get back a former GREAT leader in Jeff who can steer and guide this once great company into the future for the next 10 years etc.

This was unofficially announced in 2012 when Sinofsky "left". "Teamwork is the new mantra", Ballmer said. But you can't deliver teamwork with 7 managers in the way.

About time, I say. MSFT has been able to succeed in a massively changing market, despite being encumbered. Lose a few pounds and my bet is the innovation will accelerate further.
