The Indonesian unit of Freeport McMoran (FCX) must suspend gold and copper mining activities in the eastern part of the country, probably for up to two months, while the government investigates last month's fatal tunnel collapse, government officials say. The union representing 18K of FCX's 24K Indonesian workers reiterates that union workers will refuse to work until investigation results are released.

Is FCX required to pay the workers during this time? I wonder if there is justification for stopping above ground mining operations.

Standard procedure in mining operations during forced shut downs is increased plant maintenance and often plant modifications that increase productivity upon start up. They must pay those maintenance people any way. In some circumstances they bring in contractors to do most of the specialized work.
