2012 will be the year bricks-and-mortar retailers start to have their profitability threatened by e-commerce's growth, claims big-shot VC Marc Andreessen in an interview. The threat comes not just from Amazon (AMZN), in his view, but from a slew of upstarts trying to provide personalized experiences for consumers. Of course, Andreessen is far from an impartial observer on the subject.

    He's right. The barcode reader on smartphones means that most retailers that specialize in commodities like electronics, books, appliances, are really just giant showrooms for the online retailers.

     

    Sad but true. Of course there are some exceptionally well-run, price oriented local players (Brandsmart is really good in FL) but the vast majority are going to have their margins and their lunches eaten.
