The Roomba (IRBT) has broken out of the living room and made its way to the data center. Leveraging the iRobot Create platform, IBM is using a modified version of the vacuum-cleaning robot to plot temperature and humidity patterns in its data centers, as well as (with the help of RFID tags) automatically keep track of equipment. An EMC team in India has built a similar squad of temperature-sensing Roombas. Though the volumes involved are small, the projects highlight the potential for iRobot to exploit new applications with low-end hardware.
