High-end sellers in Hong Kong (MAGOF.PK, COH, TIF, RL, BURBY.PK, KORS, GUCG.PK) saw an influx of traffic during the three-day May Day holiday which could help boost sales totals for the quarter. According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the number of mainlanders trekking over to Hong Kong jumped 50% Y/Y during the period. A stronger yuan might be motivating more Chinese consumers to hunt for lower prices in Hong Kong.

Last year, I was passing through HK on May 1, and the SCMP already reported that there were fewer Cn consumers for the May Day holiday weekend than last year.

Then in Shanghai it was like a ghost town for May and June, which eonomic robustness seemed to be fully revived by October.

Nevertheless, after one week in Shanghai, I returned to HK for 5 days, where I found the expensive retailing in Tsimshatsui and the Island to be quite vibrant as usual. But had no specific method to measure that.

Other than the airports was far less busy and airplane HKG-PVG was smaller and not exactly full. By July, I met a Taiwanese OEM instrument manufacturer who said things were dismal, but hadn't experienced 08 factory shutdowns so there were no comparisons made.
