More than 2 months after it made its U.S. debut, the iPhone 4S (AAPL) may be cleared for sale in China. People's Daily reports the 4S has met the requirements set by Chinese regulators, and is expected to be available in early January. One big question is whether China Telecom (CHA) will join China Unicom (CHU) in offering the device. China recently passed the U.S. as the world's largest smartphone market. (earlier)

In China, it's the same story as AT&T circa 2007 : people will flock to it regardless whether CHA will carry it. Unlike the US, people aren't particularly passionate about their mobile carrier (they all work fine).

But in the land of sub-CNY 1500 smartphones (just reported today), it's hard to imagine how Apple would compete in anywhere other than the highest end premium section of the market. Although it's a commodity here, it's still a status symbol in China.

What Apple needs is toget Chinese carriers start subsidizing the phones to truly expand volume.

Workers earning less than $300/month are flocking to Apple products. The Apple's Ip-- products are the in "luxury" products to own.

Furthermore buying an IPhone at $800 and paying for cn phone service amounts to a lot less than the cost of ownership of a $200 subsidized --> well over $2000 cost in the USA
