Natural disasters such as Hurricane Irene and Japan's earthquake/tsunami made 2011 a difficult year for the U.S. insurance industry: an industry association estimates insurers posted only a 1.9% annualized rate of return through Q3 - the industry's lowest rate since 2008. Low interest rates also took a toll on results, and helped compel insurers such as TRV and ALL to raise rates to boost profits.
