A day after reporting Apple (AAPL) will release a TV set in Q2 or Q3, a different set of sources tell Digitimes Apple will "finalize hardware standards" for its sets by the end of Q2, and may enlist chip foundry TSM and chip testing/packaging firms ASX and SPIL in its efforts. However, in a sign of how Digitimes' sources can have conflicting information, the ones behind today's report suggest the TV sets will be released near the end of 2012.

Apple TV has been expected for a long time. The issue is cost and how it will fare given Apple TV boxes are a bit of a flop. In the end, I agree, TVs should eventually just be used as giant monitors and connected to a computer with stations just being streaming or download websites. It's ridiculous to have to wait and watch stations or have to record a show. The future is download and play whenever you want. That should eventually be great for hard drive makers.

Congrats for Apple and Western Digital for championing this but I think their error is trying to make computers more like TV than making TV's just an extension of the computer.

Fully agree Moon. I ditched cable almost a year ago and haven't missed it one-bit. People need to see the future isn't cable tv or a dvr/Tivo.
