App fragmentation could be a problem for BB10 (BBRY -1.4%), warns Strategy Analytics' Neil Shah. Whereas the touch-only Z10 has a display with a 1.67:1 aspect ratio (1280x768 resolution), the QWERTY-sporting Q10's display has a 1:1 ratio (720x720 resolution). That means developers, many of whom are already inclined to write for iOS and Android before BB10, have to "specially tweak" apps originally written for the Z10 to work with the Q10 (and soon the Q5). Thorsten Heins declared last month there are 120K BB10 apps available, up from 70K in January.

Really, it took this analyst all this time to figure out that the touch screen BB10 and qwerty models have a different screen size? Give that man a prize! This really is breaking news!

The issue is ratio, not size, but sure, it's no big deal!

In addition to the above 2 comments, I would just like to add a thought: most Q10 users are business oriented -- apps are not overly relevant to them.

this analyst makes it sound like it is a lot of work to tweak the apps for the different screen size when it is actually not that hard. More bull from analysts.

So are you expecting anything more than bull from those who are afraid of what is going to happen shortly. Isn't Android the most fragmented and insecure OS?

Ask an App Dev how easy it is to tweek...sDK has been available well ahead of launch and is easy to do.

Have you heard app development community complain? No!

Well, some "analysts" have no knowledge of software programming, but want to write something.

Just wanted to point out that what was missing from the article written by Mr. Obvious was that hotdogs come 10 to a package while the buns are sold 8 to a package, and you may have to specially tweak the size of the dogs by taking a sharp knife (Note: Never use a dull knife as you may injure yerself, always ensure it's properly honed, you should have an adult perform this action if you are unfamiliar with sharpening devices) and cutting off a small portion so that you will not end up with just those 2 leftover dogs in the freezer because they inadvertently get pushed to the back of the freezer and will remain there past their Use By date which Mr. Obvious would also like to caution is different than the Best By date but then that is a subject for another rambling run-on sentence on another day.

Where I live (over here in Canada), they sell hotdogs in packs of 12 and buns in packs of 12. Too logical, eh?

I've dabbled in programming. One of the things I had to deal with was setting up my UIs to adapt to different resolutions. It was not that difficult. Not difficult on Windows, not on Android, and (probably?) not on BB10. If a coder can't figure it out, they don't deserve to call themselves a programmer or software engineer.

I agree that the premise of the warning is silly.

Maybe BBRY's new legal council has scared the analysts into making sure the propaganda they release is based in fact.

This guy must be kidding. As usual, poor technical knowledge turned into "expert-like" language ... Well, in short : not really if devs have done their work properly.
The only problem we'll face (and it has been announced months ago, prior the Z10 launch) is the 1280X720 resolution for next Z10-like devices (current is 1280X768).
It's a concern for games or "high graphics apps", notably. But we are waaay better than android fragmentation, for sure.
We'll have only two aspects ratio (16:9 and 1:1) and that's a fair deal IMHO ... even far better than previous fragmentation on legacy BB devices

    Everything is detailed here :

    Oh good grief.

Screen resolution will not cause as much fragmentation as all the different flavors of Android available because carriers won't upgrade.

    Love these buying opportunities...

Obviously the Q10 is less of a gaming phone... For Apps that need a minor tweak I'm sure the developers can handle it! Think they had no clue a smaller screen was coming lol

Q5/Q10 will be compatible ar least according to what I read on the other day

You mean the Z10 and Q10 have differnet screen sizes? I thought something was fishy when I went from the Z10 to Q10. I thought I was the only one who noticed this. Good to know the world isn't completely blind.

No! No! No! The screens are the same size, but they look different because the new temporal field adjuster from their just acquired Tardis labs, intended to let them add a key board without making it too big for your pocket, is still in beta! A few tweaks will correct this...

this type of psedu-intellectual bashing is so typical to stop upside movement of heavily shorted shares of GOOD companies. Shorts wouldn't need to worry if BBRY were crappy.

How many screen sizes does Samsung use for their apps? From 4" to 13" in .25" increments.

I used a sports app that took all of a week to get tweaked to fit on my Q10 properly (basically the logo went from oval back to round). They must have had atleast 500 programmers working on it 24/7.

Fellow should look up the term "responsive" and see how programmers (not arm chair analysts) get around different screen sizes and resolutions. They're way ahead of the afterthoughts.
