The final tally shows global stock market capitalization sank 12.1% or $6.3T to $45.7T in 2011. Of some interest, major Asian markets were hit even harder than much of Europe - the Nikkei -17.3%, the Hang Seng -20%, and Shanghai -22%. Led by China, the MSCI Emerging Markets index also shed 20% of its value.

    Most investors wised up and got out of Dodge because of the swings and uncertainty.
