Cisco (CSCO +0.3%) is delivering an evolutionary upgrade for its costly CRS core router line. The upgraded routers, named CRS-X, will deliver a 150% increase in capacity/slot, and support 4 100G ports/slot with the help of Cisco's CPAK silicon photonics tech. Cisco also claims the CRS-X will support 64 100G ports per 7' rack, and that this beats the 40 offered by Alcatel-Lucent's (ALU) 7950 router and the 32 by Juniper's (JNPR) T4000; but Alcatel claims to have reached 80. Light Reading recently reported Cisco is prepping a next-gen core routing platform called CTR that (based on reported info) would deliver a 150% capacity/slot increase from the CRS-X.
