Will automakers embrace Gorilla Glass? Corning (GLW) exec Jeffrey Evenson argues they should, claiming Gorilla Glass use could improve a car's fuel economy by lowering its weight and center of mass, and would also make vehicles quieter inside. He adds at least one high-end automaker is expected to begin making a car sporting Gorilla Glass within the next year. Also: Evenson expects Corning's antimicrobial glass (has healthcare and display applications) to be certified by the EPA within a few months, and sees Corning's Willow Glass enabling "hundreds of new products," from flexible displays to chip insulation layers.

But how are people expected to escape from vehicles in the event of a mishap? It just doesn't sound very safe.

Also, I really doubt replacing regular glass with gorilla glass will cause any significant fuel-savings. That sounds like quite a stretch for real world application

    Weight savings = Fuel savings

I'm not sure how much actual weight could be saved but every pound on a car matters.

If it's just as strong but half the weight, it would be great!!

Like the idea, need to see what auto manufacturers long term tests show before this idea gains traction. Long GLW

I doubt this can happen at a price point that would be good for Corning. The original article is very short on details and reasoning. For instance, it also claims that GG would make cars quieter but says nothing to back that up. Thinner glass would make the cabin noisier.
