T-Mobile USA (DTEGF.PK) and Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) are reportedly not part of the NSA's program to collect metadata about the phone calls on their networks, partly due to their ownership ties to foreign companies. However, it's likely that the NSA is still able to scoop up the metadata, as the the calls eventually travel on infrastructure operated by U.S. companies that do work with the NSA.

Let me pose a hypothetical question: God forbid our country suffers another blistering attack by (insert bete noire here). Do ya think people will want to know if the gubment was doing everything, and I mean everything, possible to thwart the attack? And if not why not?
Government spying I take as a given in this post 9/11 world of ours.

llioula - when you say ‘everything’, would that also include sealing our borders to prevent terrorists from entering the country in the first place? Would that also include monitoring email and telephone calls made from mosques, churches, and synagogues which from my understanding are currently excluded from NSA monitoring?

The US Government is failing to address primary weaknesses in our defense against terrorism and then attempts to justify monitoring 300 million people? This has 'fail' written all over it. Address the primary weaknesses first and if that fails to address the threats, they would have my full blessing to monitor all communications.

    Give me a break!
Does anyone really believe we can keep anyone out if they really want in? A fence? Better checks at entry points? What a joke. The only real way to keep anyone out is to make it so unattractive if they are here they wouldn't come here even to visit. We're so tied up with "What's in it for me" that we can't really see other nations problems or the "Hate America" that is being preached everyday all around the world. We won't even defend or fight for the life-style we think is our god given right to enjoy.

Monitoring internet purchases would be far more beneficial than phone records. Every single mass murder in the past 10 years or so has had some element of a large, suspicious purchase of ammo bought thru internet sale.
