Vail Resorts (MTN +0.1%) reports visitors to its resorts down 15.3% Y/Y as "For the 1st time in 30 years, a lack of snow has not allowed us to open the back bowls in Vail as of Jan. 6, and, for the first time since the late 1800s, it did not snow at all in Tahoe in December." Shares are getting a bit of respite today after diving 13% the past 2 weeks. (PR)

Of the Vail resorts in Colorado, Keystone is the only place with fairly decent artificial snow on the fast groomed blues and the greens. Only three or four back runs are open, and for me, they are just dangerous and no fun because there are too many people in too little space.

Word is that snow at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Copper and Winter Park is lousy. Steamboat apparently isn't much better. Loveland looks ok from the Interstate and Arapahoe Basin is open but probably a bit icy like Keystone.

Statewide, snow is about 73% of normal and one of the four driest years in the last 30, if not the driest.

4" to 6" or so snow forecast for the weekend. We need 18" to 30".
