It's real. That's the word (video) from MGM CEO Jim Murren on the chances that online poker will become legal in the U.S. He says Internet gaming will pass in 2012, turning an illegal multi-billion dollar business into a legal one. He counts MGM as one of the firms that will prosper from the coming boom. Other interesting poker bets: BYD, PTEK, BPTY.PK, WYNN.

    Interesting scenario.

In the past, many local courts have held that Poker is not gambling, but a game of skill. Most of those rulings were based on players being able to "read" (or not read) other players sitting at the table.

Since online poker has no face-to-face among players, I can see where it could make for some interesting court cases.

Not sure why you would tack PTEK into the "interesting poker bets". They make poker hardware for live playing (I've played them on cruise ships in the past). This isn't a company that would benefit from the possibility of online poker being completely legal in the US. In fact this potentially harms their ability to generate interest in their poker tables. The tables are great for live games without requiring chips or a dealer.

Could someone point out why MGM has an advantage over upstart competitors in any on-line gambling business? MGM's strengths have been derived from casino location-amenities that draw tourists. What strength does MGM have that provides an on-line competitive advantage? Is MGM's advantage similar to IBM's in making and selling personal computers?

MGM and other large casino companies have one big thing going - name recognition. Online poker = trusting your money to some cyber outfit. Would you trust (WYNN) or (MGM) or Sam & Cindi's Online Poker Palace?

I dont understand on line poker or gambling.... anyone who trusts that it's run fairly seems to be misguided or at least over trusting.

chances are, any of the major brand names in vegas that are governed by the NGC wouldn't be "rigged" compared to random online sites. I would definitely trust a MGM/Wynn poker site way more than something based out of Bermuda

brick-and-mortar poker joints have a major advantage of customers doing actual gambling while waiting for a table or between hands.
