Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) says it will no longer roll out smartphones and tablets on its network that don't support 4G LTE connectivity. The decision represents an attempt by Verizon to exploit its lead relative to T in deploying LTE services, and could be a modest positive for QCOM, given the higher chip content of 4G devices. It also might be another hint the iPhone 5 will support LTE. (yesterday)

Probably combination of 2 things :

    1. Force customers onto LTE so they can get a return on their network buildout investment, even though it's purely an accounting trick.

    2. Force Apple to use LTE on the next iPhone, no matter how good or bad the batt life the chipsets are by then.

No one forces Apple to do anything.

I'm sure iPhone 5 will support LTE, but not because Verizon says so.

Still going to have a lot of iPhone 4 users on Verizon's 3G.

the question become - if Verizon is very firm about its LTE-only policy and Apple is very firm about its batt life issue, who wins and who loses

Batt life will be less of an issue with ARM's new iPhone 5 dual power option processor.
