Windows 8.1 will include 3D printing APIs meant to ease the process of building apps that support the technology, Microsoft (MSFT) announces at its BUILD conference. Among the APIs is a 3D printing dialog menu similar to the standard print dialog found in many Windows apps. 3D Systems (DDD +0.9%), Stratasys (SSYS +1.3%) acquisition target MakerBot, and CAD software giant Autodesk (ADSK +1.4%) plan to support the APIs.

The more that standards are adopted, the easier it is for the masses to use. More importantly that allows firms to work with others and third parties.

I sure wish Apple would get involved. Their 3D Printer would be an engineering work of art. They could develop a simple iCAD app like Pages and Numbers and allow for design in your browser window with new OSX Mavericks. Finally add 3D design shopping to iTunes for downloading .stl files.
