Is Facebook (FB -1.1%) becoming a game publisher? TechCrunch reports the company is "working with a handful of small mobile game developers" to promote their titles via mobile ads in exchange for a revenue cut. Such a program gives Facebook a way to monetize mobile gaming, where Apple and Google, rather than Facebook, are the ones receiving 30% cuts on in-app purchases (not to mention downloads). The company's popular app install ads (recently said to have driven ~25M downloads) act as another mechanism. In spite of the mobile shift, Facebook had 250M users playing games on its site as of March, up from 235M in Aug. '12.
