Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.A, RDS.B) says a June incident on a pipeline operated by its Nigerian joint venture resulted in the company's largest oil spill in the country this year. The June spill that forced Shell to shut down its 150K bbl/day Trans Niger Pipeline was believed to be the result of oil theft, a common problem in Nigeria.

Not a major spill compared to BP's Macondo but the US have hopefully set a precedent in terms of fines, clean up etc in dealing with oil and other environmental disasters anywhere in the world by any company......right (?)

Fining Shell would be punishing the victim. Punish the perpetrators instead.
