Kroger (KR +0.6%) says it will end its popular double-discount program as it moves to "everyday" pricing. If the strategy sounds vaguely familiar, it's not a far cry from the strategy adopted by J.C. Penney to disastrous results. Though other grocery chains have also ended double couponing and the company maintains customer response is positive, the JCP lesson on separating a customer from a coupon still speaks volumes.

JC Penny raised prices by changing the mix of items, consumers were not fooled, Kroger has done this in several markets successfully. No comparison

The everyday low price strategy has worked well for some retailers, including Walmart and Lowes.

But far be it from me to stand in the way of a snarky Market Current

Couponing is different than running a promotion. Just because they are getting rid of double coupons does not mean they getting rid of hi-low promotional activity.
