On top of reporting of a major surge in both mobile search traffic and ad revenue, online ad firm RKG offers some negative data for Facebook (FB). RKG clients reported CPM-based ad prices for Facebook's FBX exchange (delivers sidebar ads based on non-Facebook activity) were 78% below display ad averages, and that revenue per ad click was 9% below those for other display campaigns. Though Facebook's ad rates/impressions and brand support have been growing, complaints about the usefulness/relevancy of its ads remain widespread. (click-through rates) (news feed FBX test)

I would have to agree with this. My experience was that ads I saw on FB were not very accurately targeted to me or my interests.

I though I was getting spammed. Somehow ads are being linked to some of my connection, but the ads that are being attached to them are obscene I might considering closing my account if this continues. Now that I know it is Facebook's doing they might be getting some hate mail from me as well.

I believe the ads are based on searches conducted on the web. For example, if you are searching for a vacation, ads about vacations will appear. The ads are also based on information you post and reply to. The folks that complain need to worry about the surfing habits they conduct.

That was the way Facebook would customize solicitations. Now Facebook is allowing any company to solicit you. They might be paying more for this opportunity.
