More on Intuitive Surgical (ISRG): Q2 misses across the board despite an 8% Y/Y increase in total sales. Instruments and accessories revenue increased 18% to $ 265M from $224M in Q212. Its da Vinci surgical procedures grew approximately 18% Y/Y, driven primarily by growth in general surgery, U.S. gynecology and international urology procedures, which were partially offset by a decline in U.S. prostatectomy procedures. Systems revenue declined 6% to $216M however, on fewer sales of the da Vinci surgical system. Shares -6.7% AH.

Stanford Epic website had a remarkably successful use of the DaVinci surgical device on a patient who had survived cancer of the back of the tongue but was being fed through a stomach tube in the side of his abdomen as he could not swallow and had to breathe through a tracheostomy.

With the DaVinci Dr. Ed Damrose was able to reconstruct his esophagus and the back of his throat and in a video he was breathing through his nose and mouth and sipping through a straw and talking normally. A remarkable use of the device. It will find more uses as time goes on.

On the flip side, I talked to a colorectal surgeon who says the DaVinci device can look only in one direction, and in surgery on the colon the surgeon often has to look down into the pelvis, for which the DaVinci is very good, but the surgeon also has to look up towards the upper colon (towards the diaphragm) and the DaVinci cannot pivot and look in 180 degrees in the other direction.

I am sure that the Intuitive Surgical is aware of these limitations and I expect they will come out with more versatile devices in the years to come. Still seems like a great company to me.
