Apple (AAPL) has ordered display prototypes for a ~13" iPad and 4"+ iPhones, the WSJ reports. Reuters reported in June Apple is thinking of launching 4.7" and 5.7" iPhones, and South Korea's ETNews reported in May Apple is looking to launch a 12.9" iPad in early 2014. As the WSJ cautions, Apple often tests hardware prototypes that are never commercialized. Tim Cook has hinted a bigger iPhone, increasingly seen as a necessity as demand for ~5" and larger Android devices takes off, will arrive if/when Apple creates one that meets its standards.

Interesting news. Apple has and is introducing product innovation however it must also pay attention to good marketing policy and adjust products features to consumer demand. It is not enough to offer products that no one can imagine. After its introduction and the consumers are off and running it much evolve to keep or grow markets share.

Not innovation is correct, but in countries where the smart phone is the only computer one may own, a larger screen is very popular. My Chinese Broker on a recent business trip to 7 cities in China, reports that the Chinese love Apple, and regularly use large screen phones. To address Chinese markets and others,Apple would be wise to add a larger screen phone.

I am a fan of Apple but #1 complaint i have is the iPhone's screen size. I hear the same from my firends whose eyesight is not wat it used to be. Besides apple has a history of starting with small screens - remember original Macinotsh?

That would eliminate any reason to buy a Samsung.

Great for consumers but not sure additional products will be great for shareholders. Additional models will drive up production costs and margins will decrease. I see this more of a defensive move to maintain market share as opposed to innovative to increase share

Boomers are affluent and aging. Many don't see all that well. They don't need to put the thing in a shirt-pocket. A bigger screen fits fine in a purse. A great geriatric market!!

I haven't seen any real new innovation from Apple, what I have seen is the ipad, ipad2 and the mini ipad with the same technology, nothing has changed. Apple needs to make up it's mind on which screen size to market and innovate it

Great leadership. Apple "developing" larger screens two years after it became obvious that these were superior for the overall smartphone experience. It's makes Apple's lame arguments about Samsung being a copycat look hilarious.

Pop quiz: Name a single innovative development from Apple since Cook assumed the leadership role.

Even before Cook, Apple was not an innovator of big ideas. They made their money augmenting others' inventions for an easier and more reliable user experience. They didn't invent MP3 players, smartphones, or even personal computers.

Apple is more like a Sony or Toyota than a Google or early Ford Motor Company. For Apple to succeed, they need an innovative company to come up with a great new consumer product that hasn't yet been gentrified.

Agree, market leader in profitability does not need to be innovator of the market, they just need to buy innovators.

Cisco did very few innovative products, most successful they always bought outside and made a fortune.

Current mantra about screen size is so laughable as well, sure Apple will eventually bring bigger and also smaller display size phones. Is that 'innovation', really, it seems that seekingalpha gang thinks that they are innovators with screen size ideas..

Relieved to have exited my position at a small gain following yesterdays earnings release.
Over the past year, I have experienced too many instances where software is being updated making older hardware such as Airport Express no longer functional. Further, the Apple environment seems to be getting cluttered with more unneeded features.

13" iPad sounds like iPad pro, timing would make Haswell successor a candidate from Intel with full MacOS (with added touch support of course) . Mac Book Air already provides better usage time than iPad with much better performance.

Adding that Anandtech just released comparison of Macbook Air and iPad4 power consumption on similar load:

looks like even Haswell on a laptop would be able to replace iPad4 CPU/GPU with better usagetime and greater performance. Ultra low voltage part would do even better if used.

Lately AAPL has shown tremendous strength in making smaller screens (iPAD mini). Now they are making a huge technological leap in making larger screens. AAPL's innovative prowess never ceases to amaze me!!!

13" iPad? I sure hope people don't use it as an outdoor camera and try to take pictures of their kids on graduation days or at Disneyland with it, because It'll look really silly.

uggh, more screen size nonsense. I get people buy them, I think mostly just because its an easy sales pitch in store, but can I start a group for people who think that the original iphone size was the correct one, even better than the 5, and much more sensible than the Samsung nonsense?

I want a phone that fits easily in my pocket and is easy to use with one hand. I know that's crazy talk, but I would probably consider buying a SMALLER iphone before a bigger one. I secretly wish Apple would just put a cell phone in the ipad mini, and put out a commercial that simply has the ipad miniphone drop down on top of the S3 and note and say, "BLAM! Now please shut up and prove you really want it."

Not really news, speculation is more like it, besides let's see tomorrows news on earnings which in my book is more interesting. Something really new, beating earnings estimates!

It's a no brainer! People want the option of buying a bigger iPhone! With several different lines of products, (price range and screen sizes)Apple will blow the competion out of the water.............. consumers will forget that other phones even exist! The challenge will be to produce enough units to satisfy the demand.

This keeps showing up as new on Seeking Alpha, and it's not new. Now it will no longer show up. This is the only reason for this post.
