does anyone know a reason that stocks gap so much?
I'd think that if someone able to analyze the results believes they know/understand the new value, they'd want to slowly trade in the new direction. Why let everyone "know" so soon?

One reason I can think is that the larger traders can protect themselves by buying puts. Then if there's a "reason" (aka cover story) that's plausible bad news, they can dump their stock at
market rates, driving the price down down down down. When the market opens, they sell the puts, and buy the stock back to drive the price up again. Maybe they don't sell the puts the next day. They can wait until the downward momentum is bottoming out, etc.
I could also envision large funds doing this when the market seems to be peaking. Without upward forward progress the benefit of waiting becomes more risky. Better to sell sell sell (protected by puts), get everyone worried, pick their moment, sell the put and buy back the stock. comments?

Same quarter last year, EXPE beat the expectation, but PCLN missed , and its stock dropped $100 after the hour. Now, EXPE just released its earnings and missed big, I expect that PCLN would miss again when it release its result on Aug. 8, particularly based on PCLN said itself in the last earnings release that it expects Q2 to be weak. With PCLN being pumped up so much in the last few months, we need to prepare that a drop of more than $100 may happen this time if it missed.

Priceline trades at 30x earnings. For a company that books hotel rooms.

The 5 year chart reminds me of Apple or Netflix.
