JPMorgan (JPM -0.8%) is exploring strategic alternatives for its physical commodities business including "a sale, spin off, or strategic partnership." With pressure mounting from Washington and the public eye now focused squarely on Wall Street's role in commodities markets thanks in part to a NY Times piece published last weekend, now is probably as good a time as any to bid the business adieu. The bank "will remain fully committed to its traditional banking activities in the commodity markets." (previous)

Wow! This is huge news if true. Commercials have been covering their paper shorts like crazy and JPM even took delivery of over 7 million oz of physical silver last month for its own account. By the way, that is above legal position limits for longs on futures. Of course, they were given an exemption too!

Quixote had his windmills and it looks like folks these days have substituted the Banks. The story is still the same.
