Pentagon plays down speculation it could cancel F-35 program

The Defense Department has stressed that there are no plans to scrap Lockheed Martin's (LMT) F-35 program or a project for a new long-range stealth bomber.

Leaked documents had shown that canceling the programs were among the options under review as the Pentagon copes with huge budget cuts.

On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel had said that cost reductions would require tradeoffs between maintaining the size of the military and high-end weapons programs.

"This review identified...possible decisions we might face, under scenarios we may or may not face in the future," says Pentagon Spokesman George Little.
