Green Mountain Coffee Roasters eyes carbonated beverages

  • Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) CEO Brian Kelley said the company will provide an update on its plans for carbonated beverages at an investor meeting next month.
  • The exec says Green Mountain has done plenty of research on what the consumer wants and has a narrowed strategy.
  • The entry of the company into carbonated beverage has been bandied around plenty, which could be part of the reason shares of SodaStream (SODA), +0.7% premarket, appear to be unfazed by the latest development.
  • Earnings call transcript
  • GMCR -5.1% premarket.

Home made carbonated beverages will continue to grow exponentially in North America. GMCR is the perfect company to grow this business, even better than SODA, although Soda will continue to flourish. Both are long term buy and hold propositions. IMO, GMCR will ultimately surpass SODA and dominate this growing market, but it will take years as GMCRs are starting from scratch. GMCR will have an extensive distribution system in partnership with Starbucks, who will only be too happy to participate in this market segment.
Disclaimer: I have no position in any of these companies at the moment, but I will soon.
