The DOJ files suit to block US Airways-American Airlines merger

The Department of Justice files a lawsuit to challenge the planned merger of US Airways (LCC -7.3%) and American Airlines (AAMRQ.PK).

The civil action includes six states and the District of Columbia.

    Aside from the predictable meddling from this Administration, the irony of the market reaction -- LCC down 11%, AMR down 33% -- is that LLC is the one left in a more precarious position than AMR. AMR debt holders were getting 72% of any merger, and AMR post-bankruptcy is now lean and mean, loaded with cash and fully capable of operating without USAir. It's USAir that should be worrying.
