Facebook leads project to connect the whole world

  • Facebook (FB) has got together with Samsung (SSNLF.PK), Qualcomm (QCOM), Nokia (NOK) and other technology companies to launch a project called Internet.org that aims to make Internet access available to the two-thirds of the earth's population who are not yet connected.
  • The group also includes Ericsson (ERIC), Opera Software and Taiwan's MediaTek.
  • The effort mirrors Google's Project Loon, an attempt to bring Web access to remote regions via the use of balloons.
  • Around 5B people aren't yet connected to the Internet, which is a mighty number of potential Facebook users. (PR)

Nokia Asha 501 already provides data free access to the Facebook app and m.facebook.com for users in Africa and India. Nokia has been trying to work this with cell partners well before this news!

Maybe the entire organization will help it along even faster!

Yes, 5B aren't connected to the internet..."a mighty number" of potential FB users. I'm sure that those (the median on this planet) surviving on less than $2 per day can't wait to post their dinner and drink pictures, and to "like" their friend's status updates.

You make a valid point. However, by nature humans desire to be connected. For some it might be to share their meals, but for most it is simply to be a part of something. Rich or Poor, healthy or sick, people want to communicate with others that share their interests and techy gadgets help a lot of people do that.

I don't use facebook, but in your $2 day example with a Asha 501 phone, it might be the only way to do this miles apart in a poor area...
