Disney getting serious about gaming, will profits follow?

Disney (DIS -0.7%) will shut down Toontown Online and two other online games for children as it increases its focus on Club Penguin and new mobile game ventures.

Club Penguin has been seriously beefed up with characters from the Star Wars franchise and Pixar movies popping up.

The big picture: With Disney Infinity up and running on top of the other gaming moves, losing money in the Disney Interactive segment may be a thing of the past for the company.

I've been waiting for Disney to make a strong move into the gaming market for some time -- and they have finally found a way to cross gaming with toys and incorporate all the characters kids love in a tactile way that makes them collectibles to boot! Even tho Interactive is a small division for Disney, it is a win-win in every way since it's yet one more way to leverage their brands -- Go see whatever new movie, then go home and play in it with the playset that co-releases... Brilliant.

It's going to be an expensive Christmas this year... oh yeah and next year... and the next...
