Himax surges following bullish Craig-Hallum note

  • The firm predicts top and bottom-line impact of Himax's (HIMX +13.4%) LCOS microdisplay business could be larger than originally expected.
  • A big chunk of Himax's massive gains over the last 12 months stem from hopes of major Google Glass-related LCOS microdisplay shipments, and perhaps also expectations of design wins for rival products.

Google glass is not even released yet. Craig Hallum has been doing a lot of pumping lately.

LCOS microdisplays are not just for google glass. Think: xbox, ps4 headgear. how about automotive HUD navi and instrument cluster in High def? The next big thing in the automotive world will be Heads up display. These systems will be switchable into surfing the web as well. In car LTE is also coming quickly. 100s of millions of cars will be using this type of system. Maybe Craig has been told something.

HIMX was worth $10 without Google Glass, but now it will surpass that either this year or next year for sure.

Took profits in HIMX today..feel as though market may take a hit soon due to Syria and rumors of govt. shutdown. Market hates uncertainty. Will buy back in on a dip.

If Himax is set to do anything it is to miss the next quarter on large panel weakness in China and give no guidance on glass unit volumes or launch date, sending the stock back down to the five range. If you are buying Himax now because Hallum told you so before they whiff the next quarter then you are a great candidate for wearing the Glass product because you are a mindless follower.

    North Gate,

You do realize that HIMX gave guidance half way (15-Aug) into the quarter so they have some vision. They are also going out on the Investor's Conference trail and I doubt they gave guidance they could not meet. That is like going out of your way to make fun of your own bad haircut.

I suspect their wider range in earnings is due to the prep and run up to the Christmas season by customers Sony (PlayStation), Microsoft (xBox) and even Oculus.

And, by the way, the 2Q actual was near the high end of HIMX's own guidance. It was the analysts who got it wrong.

Finally, the market is forward looking and the future for HIMX is so bring............we all need shades..........made by HIMX/Google.

Coupling that with their brilliant performance on the sheets so far, it's really not that hard to imagine.

HIMX is a good company and LCOS is the future of computer graphics. That said, Corning will probably emerge as the dominant player.

    barnsey,

HIMX is not competing with GLW/Corning. GT Advanced Technology (GTAT) is; especially in the smart phone markets for:

    - camera lens where many have switched from Gorilla Glass to synthetic sapphire

    - finger print scanner; especially with Apple reportedly going to a concave scanner (more surface area and keeps the phone thinner elsewhere) which will be synthetic sapphire rather than Gorilla Glass (again reportedly but we will find out next week).

    - Technology watch covers (sapphire already used for bezels in high end watches for superior hardness and scratch resistance).

    - Smartphone screens........right now the battle ground with Corning's Gorilla Glass winning due to price differential (slowly closing) and supply chain (need more sapphire furnace capacity as that will also impact price).

But, in the end, I think synthetic sapphire is a better product; just more costly and lacking higher volume supply availability. And, given the choice, there is a daily increasing number of people who have scratched/cracked their Gorilla Glass screens and who would pay an extra $20 for synthetic sapphire..........with money they probably pay now to protect the screen which wouldn't need the same level of protection.

But, where does HIMX and Corning/GLW compete?
