Immersion haptic tech used in Samsung smartwatch

  • Immersion's (IMMR -1%) TouchSense haptic feedback platform is used to provide "optimized tactile effects and notifications" for Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch, which was announced last week. The news comes 6 months after Immersion announced a major licensing deal with Samsung for its basic haptics IP.
  • Given the nascent state of the smartwatch market and the fact early hands-on impressions for the Gear have been mixed, initial Gear volumes are likely to be much lower than those for marquee Samsung smartphones such as the Galaxy S4 and Note 3.
  • Last week, Immersion announced a multi-year licensing deal with Xiaomi, and that Xiaomi's new flagship Mi3 smartphone leverages TouchSense.
