Stocks took a break from the rally that had the Dow posting three straight sessions of triple-digit gains, as the euphoria around the Syria situation fades and investors focus on next week's Fed policy meeting and eventually a congressional fight over raising the U.S. debt ceiling.

Metals took a pounding: Gold closed 2.4% lower at $1330.70, and silver fell 4.3% to $22.17.

Treasury prices rose after a solid auction; the 10-year yield fell to 2.907%.
