U.K. iPhone 5C pre-orders "a big disappointment"

  • "They are 60% to 70% less than we were expecting, and we didn’t expect them to be massively high given it’s not the flagship model," says one mobile network source, while another operator says total 5C orders are only one-tenth of what's been typical during other Apple phone launches.
  • Apple (AAPL +1.9%) of course, decided to release only the 5C, but not the 5S for pre-order. Both models arrive at retailers tomorrow.

I'm not sure why people are comparing the 5c to prior model launches. The real comparison will be made when the preorders for the 5s are available. The 5c is just a bonus, IMO.

A model launch is a model launch. Personally, I'll be comparing the combined totals of the 5c/5s with the previous opening sales.

The 5C is more about color selection, which you can't see until they arrive.

LOL obviously the iPhone doesn't come in dollar green for Apple lol. And yes, people are waiting for a real new product launch which is expected to come in fake gold (which may turn green lol).

I live in the UK and believe me there is a lot of hostility towards (AAPL) these days. People over here love their Samsungs and Blackberrys.

    Sad but true!

And they should hang onto those Blackberries, which someday will be worth a lot more money, like antique lead soldiers or the original Apple desktops. On Samsung, they should wait for new models with a winking eye, a purring sound, and moving bare legs, or maybe ask Samsung to throw in a free watch.

I don't think Samsung will be able to give those away! They will have to pay people to wear those watches. They are much better at TVs!

Having lived in the UK, I observed that people really do not have much loyalty to their cell phone brands, models, or providers. Cell phones throughout Europe seem to be utilitarian items. Buying and disposing of SIM cards for unlocked phones is commonplace. My colleagues and friends in Europe have SIM cards from different networks, which they interchange in their phones as they desire.

    are you kidding me?

I don't know about you but nobody i know has a 'hostility' towards any tech company. All i do know is that iphones are incredibly popular. Last year i noticed that iPhone 5s weren't very popular a few months after release and instead id see the 4s everywhere. Only during around summer time of 2013 i noticed a lot of 5s around.

But what i don't get is that why they try and show overall demand by what is sold on the launch because so many people are tied into 1 or 2 year contracts which might expire at any point in the year, only then will they upgrade as they wouldn't have to pay a lot more money extra.

With Siemens gone and now Nokia eaten by the Microsoft monster poor Europe has no strong inferior domestic handset brand to buy. Don't blame Apple for the fact socialism doesn't work very well in a market that demands constant innovation. It will inevitably fall behind more capitalist oriented economies with strong civil rights.

Strangely the US is slowly moving away from capitalism and their legal system is slowly eroding the ability to innovate and be creative which civil liberties imparted on us. If the world embraced the civil liberties the Constitution provided as was intended by our founding fathers we would be living in a world with advanced technology we won't see for a couple decades from now and Microsoft would not have been able to stall OS innovation for 3 decades with code stolen and bought through lying and cheating.

These Brits are strange. Blackberries are going down the tube with big write-down of inventory expected next week and they still like it. Big lineups in front of Apple stores overnight for Apple stores to open here this morning in Vancouver and the gold and silver Apples are already selling at a premium in the black market trade in China. Don't feel sad for Apple especially if you own the stock. Feel sorry if you are shorting it.

I think the iP5C is a long term winner, but it is an old phone in a colorful plastic dress. Who wants to preorder one? I would want to see it and use it some first. Sounds like that won't be a problem. It is still the number 2 phone in the world on many benchmarks, although some of the newest phones pass it on a few marks. Seeing and holding the S model will be a problem. The smartphone market could be maturing, too. If Apple gets a tepid rollout tomorrow...lookout below!!!

if this was/is true, it does not tally with the carphonewarehouse webpage, http://bit.ly/15YQIGl , Have a look, and wou will see the 5c listed as best seller, with phone5 listed as number 2. It's been that way all week.
Carphonewarehouse are a major distributer, covering most of the networks, and have a large web presence, and a store on every high street in britain

The same thing is playing its self out as happened when Blackberry launched the Z10. Every one kept saying that the media was wrong and that sales were better than what was being quoted. Okay well you saw what happened! When is Apple going to learn that they need a new OS their current one is old and outdated. You can only put makeup on a product so long before even stupid people realize its just a gimmick and abandon the product

By launching 5S and 5C and by scrapping out the iphone 5 Appled killed the goose(iphone 5) that laid the golden eggs.

The plasticy Iphone 5C with similar specs as iphone 5 is launched at the same price point :D, do i need to say more ? Iphone 5S is expensive and hence majority of the users will just make that migration to Android which isn't intuitive to an ios user but he will bear that pain with Apple playing these games with it's customers.

The end has begun and by this year end i clearly see them trading around $350-375.

Totally wrong. I used to have android; but It's crap... I just ordered my iPhone 5S with Bell today (in Toronto) I think that is a real phone. The IPhone is worth what it costs, the only expensive thing is a GOOGLE stock.

I would agree with the price of the phones and tarrifs, too expensive. Overall quality and new OS is excellent as a refresh for tired old models. As share growth goes, it isn't going to be on the back of the iPhone or IPad anymore, it will need to be on a new must have tech interactive thing....! Can't help but feel they are paving the way already......!

When it comes to Apple, the comments have a passion behind them that you don't see elsewhere. You cannot miss the bias towards different ecosystems inherent in the comments, which utterly deprives them of objectivity.
