Merkel expected to return to power in German elections

Angela Merkel is expected to win a third term as Chancellor as Germany goes to the polls today, with the main question being who will join her conservative grouping in the coalition.

The current partner is the business-friendly Free Democrats (FDP), but they're facing a wipe-out. That could leave the left-of-center Social Democrats (SPD), which is the main opposition. Some hope that the SPD would force Merkel to soften her tough austerity stance with the likes of Greece, although the party support the Chancellor's general thrust.
