Singer M.I.A.'s bird-flipping Super Bowl halftime performance last night could pose problems for NBC (CMCSA -0.2%), which faces a potential multimillion dollar fine for the gesture. "The NFL hired the talent and produced the halftime show," NBC says. "Our system was late to obscure the inappropriate gesture and we apologize to our viewers."

It's the NFL's own fault for putting this kind of "talent" on the halftime show. I've admired Madonna's singing and dancing most of my adult life, but she has definitely lost a couple of steps and looked robotic in her dancing movements.

Can NBC technically sue the singer to recoup the fine ?

I'm far too old to appreciate the 'talent' (or what passes for it) on the half time show and in most other TV venues.

America needs to grow up. So this gesture was made for an instant. BIG DEAL.

Hollywood exported this American gesture to all the world. Now if done by Angelina Jolie when performing in a mainstream movie it is OK, while done by MIA it is KO... It seems to me a bit late to start to "moralize" the show system. Do like me, trash the TV. You will feel a lot better.

Why does even have to be brought up? It was so brief, and really no big deal until the news media makes it a big deal. This was such a trivial stunt, that it is ridiculous to even comment. Look at the garbage on tv during early hours, such as the new 2 and 1/2 men show, which is constant sexual content, not at all suggestive, just plain raunchy. They should be fined, and the reality garbage. The producers have gone berserk promoting shows of such, under the guise of entertainment. Gone are the comedies that still make people laugh, such as Carol Burnett, I Love Lucy, Red Skelton, George Gobel, Bob Hope, and many other great entertainment, that made you laugh and feel good.
So the flip at half time is mild to what is going on every day in the "World of so called entertainment"
