A new trademark from Starbucks could create a ripple

  • Starbucks (SBUX) files a trademark for a soda drink called Fizzio.
  • Though it's early in the development process, the entry of Starbucks into the market for machine-based soda drinks could potentially be negative for SodaStream (SODA -1.2%) and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR -3.1%).

looks like I'm going to have to educate the market on the subject.

Question: the link to the trademark filing provided doesn't indicate that it's either a "soda drink" or a competitive entry into the home brewing space. Am I missing something?

No you're not missing anything. SBUX currently uses a carbonator in some test locations to make craft soda blends that it is testing in select locations. This may be a commercial product for its restaurnats and not the at-home market. Consider: why would GMCR choose to enter the at-home CSD market and compete with SODA and SBUX, highly unlikely.

"Fizz," symbol for National Beverage maker of inexpensive corn fructose sodas such as "Shasta, Faygo, sounds confusing to SBUX soda "Fizzio," Is litigation coming? Both in soda business and that's where the similarity stops. "Reed," organic soda manufacturer announced last quarter they had an organic private label soda order for a large food distributor. Could SBUX be end user? "Reed," does a huge amount of private label. "Reed," is also second largest manufacturer of wellness drink "Kombucha," Unlike craft sodas "Kombucha," retails for $3.49 per bottle and is shipped and sold cold! "Reed," is largest manufacturer of craft sodas being organic and all natural.

Will SBUX announce a dividend increase this month? Looks like they've announced the increase in September the past 2 years.
