EPA backpedals after documents show cutback in 2014 ethanol blend

  • The EPA seeks to calm a furor over its apparent proposal to reduce ethanol use in gasoline next year (I, II), saying no final decisions have been made and the Obama administration remains committed to developing biofuels as a part of the plan to reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil.
  • Growth Energy, a pro-ethanol group, calls for an investigation of the leak of what it says are unverified draft documents that were still under review.
  • Ethanol groups fear any wavering on the use of ethanol could undermine their future, while oil refiners say the law is forcing them to spend billions of dollars to buy ethanol credits and driving up gasoline prices.

"If the proposed reduction is adopted, it would be a huge win for oil refiners and a nasty blow to ethanol producers and farmers."

I side with the ethanol producers and farmers. The public simply doesn't understand the good ethanol proposes for US jobs and farmers, although the RIN system has been abused by the greedy, unfortunately.

As a side, statements that E10 (or 15 for that matter) "damage" engines is unsubstantiated. Independent third party studies have found evidence to the contrary.

... and if you believe that ethanol is simply "burning food for fuel" then you don't understand the ethanol production process and the resulting valuable animal feed bi-products and intrinsic good it poses in many ways.

Ask Brazil [although their sustainable biofuels economy is almost exclusively sugarcane based] ....

Ethanol is a crime. If ethanol is good stuff then why do you need criminal politicians with guns to force people to buy it?

Are you a communist or do you believe in FREE markets?

Listen, my Toyota has a warning NOT to use E15 or E85 in it. So who knows more: The criminal politicians and the farm-ethanol lobby that bribes them or the car manufacturer?

What Toyota's ax to grind in this?

They have stated that using E15 will void their engine warranty

As far as nasty blows, I want the ethanol criminals to get as many as I can deliver.

Strike a blow for freedom, kill the ethanol bribes.

Underlying all of the pretty words it's as ugly as it can get, greedy farmers and ethanol producers need to use government guns bought with bribes to FORCE you to use their crappy product even if it ruins one of your largest investments, your car

    AAA Warns Consumers
The American Automobile Association also expressed concerns about E15, and issued warnings to drivers about elevated ethanol content.

“This new CRC research provides further support for AAA’s position that E15 sales should be suspended,” said AAA spokeswoman Ginnie Pritchett. “The association continues to recommend that the EPA initiate additional research to more fully assess the effects of E15 on consumer vehicles.”

On previous occasions, AAA warned its members that using E15 can not only cause damage to the vehicle but also void the vehicle’s warranty.

“While the latest CRC study examined only a limited range of fuel system components, the findings indicate there are certain fuel pump designs that could suffer accelerated wear and failure as a result of exposure to E15,” Pritchett said. “In addition, some fuel level senders could experience signal degradation with consequences observable to the consumer.”

OK ethanol criminals, get your hands out of our pockets and convince people that your crappy product developed with your own money is worth a flying fig. If you can survive more power to you. As PT Barnum has stated, there's a sucker born every minute.

It is a matter of oil companies negative propaganda. The reason auto companies don't want different ethanol brand is quite a different story. They tune the fuel injectors and spark plug timing to be optimized for fuel intake. Just that ethanol ignites and combust much faster, the engine that is optimized for gasoline does not perform optimum at different blend. They need to crunch the numbers and make adjustment in the computer to know what blend it is and how to adjust it. They have not done it. It is just lazy. That is all it is. NASCAR race cars use E15 in their race. It is a matter of auto maker adjust or not. Not the matter of whether ethanol is good or bad. It is a matter of whether Oil industry influence on EPA wins or not. It is cleaner, and it is made in the USA, and it is renewable. By itself, it is much better than fossil fuel

I curious as to why a free people, building cars that free people would like to buy "NEED" to satisfy your wants?

You talk of laziness but what is more lazy than using hired GUNS to FORCE people to buy your crappy product. If it was a decent product you would not need to use hired GUNS to FORCE people to act against their own interests.

If NASCAR "desires" to use E15, then I completely support them. If they didn't "DESIRE" to use it, would it be a great policy to FORCE them to use it?

The "oil industry" cannot FORCE you to use their product; its a matter of your "CHOICE". The EPA can put you in prison and even shoot to kill you if you don't comply with their ORDERS.

I would not be able to live with myself if I needed hired THUGS with GUNS to FORCE people to buy my CRAP.

the Administration really needs to come out with a "bi fuels" standard and simply end this game en toto. with all electric vehicles now the real deal fuel is going to be optional in the short term anyways (3-5 years.) the entire infrastructure...every... you know and see right on your "regular day" is simply put...irrelevant. i highly recommend you start selling the ten cent loaves of bread right now and five cent cases of beer.

Apparently der kampfer camps out all the time and doesn't have to crank home power tools to do lawn work.I have had to repair most of mine harmed by ethanol. Those who have no clue make erroneous statements.
Mean no harm here ,just stating the truth.
Ethanol causes much more harm to the environment to produce it than pumping and burning oil.

Ethanol has its place. Get govt and mandates out of the way and let the markets determine the volume and value.

Ethanol does indeed have its place; keeping the criminal politicians drunk on it so they can harm us less.

End ALL ethanol subsidies NOW! Let the voters vote on ethanol subsidies and it'll be a landslide AGAINST them! Ethanol is somewhere between BAD and EXTREMELY BAD for the engine in most vehicles.

    End ALL ethanol subsidies NOW!

This boondoggle is a fitting metaphor for the whole man-made global warming hoax - all about the money and all about lining the pockets of the supporters of it.

SirGareth, If you believe in free markets, then why do I have to use gas? Install the blender pumps and let everyone make their own choice. Until there are blender pumps everywhere, there will be no free markets.

Alcohol, ie, ethanol, was the "ORIGINAL" automotive fuel! This was BEFORE Standard Oil and the other big money corporations squeezed the farmers out because oil was too abundant and inexpensive in that era. So please don't tell me about the "damage" ethanol will cause! The only damage it will cause is to Exxon's, et al, bottom line "PROFITS" if it is ever again fully employed.
