Samsung makes patent settlement offer to EU

Oct. 17, 2013 6:32 PM ETBy: Eric Jhonsa, SA News Editor
  • To resolve an EU investigation into its use of standards-essential patents in suits against Apple, Ericsson, and others, Samsung (GM:SSNLF, OTC:SSNGY) has offered to refrain from using such patents (meant to be licensed under FRAND terms) to seek product injunctions for five years.
  • The EC says it will discuss the offer. Curtailing the use of standards-essential patents in suits might keep regulators off Samsung's back, but would also curtail the electronics giant's ability to file counter-suits against Apple in the companies' ongoing legal war, and could prompt it to go shopping for non-standards-essential mobile IP (BlackBerry is one company that has a decent amount of it).
