Nokia's Lumia sales rise to at least 8M in Q3 - report

  • Sales of Nokia's (NOK) Lumia phones reportedly rose to at least 8M devices in Q3 from 7.4M in Q2, with the figure more than double that of Q3 2012.
  • The speculation comes ahead of an event in Abu Dhabi tomorrow, where Nokia is set to launch six new products, including the company's first tablet computer and phablets.

"At least"? Izzat the best you can do? We're seeing all the great numbers coming in from Europe and 8 million is it?

If this is not a speculation, then it is a bad news. With all the good news recently, it should be well above 9mil. Luckily, it is not Nokia but for MSFT problem.

This is still Nokia's problem as these sales and profits/losses will still show up on their balance sheet.

Seppo, that doesn't mean much - stocks are valued on the entirety of their future and NOK won't have that division in just a few months.

Looks like it may be a bit under 9 million which would be a disappointment if this speculation is correct...

"at least" means the floor is set but there's some potential upside - that's the way I'm reading it.

It doesn't much matter how many it sold, the whole mobile phone thing is being sold to MSFT.

My prediction in the last Nokia article I wrote was 9.3m smart devices. The fans of Nokia said: way too low, silly, stupid, etc.

Looks like they won't even reach that figure. No wonder; consumers have been told by the press that Nokia is dead. Nokia's products already disappear from shops and carriers' promotions in Europe (one of two Windows Phone strongholds), just as shops and carriers were to take the Nokia brand on board more wholeheartedly. Already apps are pulled or not further developed, others will never see the light of day now.

In any case, it no longer really matters. I wonder where the crippled Microsoft brand will be able to take it from here. Probably to the realm of landfills & write-offs.

It's weird that MSFT accepted to buy the division without keeping the use of the Nokia name for a few years.

Today, it transpired that Microsoft messed up their 8.1 RT update.

Numbers? My estimation of 9.3m smart devices from August? Read the article to find out, how I arrived at that figure at the time.

As for the 8.1 RT update bricking people's Surface tablets - watch the news. A horror show.

I dont care about the prediction, how do you get the numbers?

Your article is very confusing there must be a cultural difference since pie charts dont have negative numbers in them, more confused than before.

Yes Paulo, this puzzles me also. Maybe additional money will be coming sooner or later to Nokia for the rights to use the brand name on the Lumia line. Just speculation unfortunately.

Why on Earth would Nokia trust their good name to another party? They'll need it themselves, you know, so the puzzle is that they let MS use it at all!

Agree, this is an awful number for Nokia and if it turns out to be 8m, I would seriously have considered cutting my position a this point.

They need to really get scale in the next 12 months. Lumia will be regarded as a money hole if Microsoft can't achieve this

Yep, if this number turns out to be true, the D&S sale looks even better, no questions asked.

I would like to point out that today you can sell Jan 2014 $7 calls against your shares for almost $0.65 - it provides around 9% downside protection, and if called away then you sold for ~$7.65/share.

If you're intending to hold for a while to see how this plays out, it's worth considering.

    Hi Red.
It will be a money hole for at least another year in part because of the huge amount Microsoft will have to spend on marketing , in part because of competition and thus low ASP which puts a minimum of 50 millions phones sold per year to show profits . If D&S was about to become profitable , I don't think Nokia BOD would have sold it to Microsoft . They must have studied the whole scenario and came to the same conclusion .

    Q1 5.6m
    Q2 7.4m
    Q3 8.0m (rumour)

Only 600k more devices Q3 would be less than half of the increase from Q1 to Q2 that was 1800k devices.

Maybe the 8 million was just European sales, which, of course, was why Andreas couldn't find them in stores - not that I expect he's been actively searching...

There are plenty in the local supermarket, RJ, as well as some Ashas, including an example of the spiffing 501, which they offered at a 20€ discount in the first week. Had I the spare, I might have been tempted! The only marketing for the lonesome Z10, is that they've moved it away from the Samsung Mega and a bunch of Lumias, and placed it next to a Sony, and some chinese phone the name of which I've forgotten already. It's sure to sell now...
