Pre-event Apple roundup: Mini supplies, 5C activations, iPad base

  • Ahead of Apple's 1PM ET iPad event (webcast, live blog), Cowen's Timothy Arcuri has joined Reuters in reporting retina iPad Mini (AAPL -0.6%) supplies will be light until 2014 due to display manufacturing issues.
  • Former Apple employee Jamie Ryan reports hearing from a couple of current employees Apple has prototyped an iPad keyboard cover similar to Microsoft's Surface Touch Covers. If Apple launches a keyboard accessory, it could be bad news for Logitech (LOGI +0.7%), whose Ultrathin iPad keyboard covers have sold very well.
  • Though multiple reports indicate Apple has slashed iPhone 5C production and upped 5S production, Localytics' latest activation data indicates the global ratio of in-use 5S to 5C units has fallen to 2.3:1, from 3.3:1 near launch time. In the U.S., the ratio has dropped to 1.9:1 from 3:1.
  • Localytics also reports the second and first-gen iPads (neither have retina displays) still respectively make up 38% and 8% of the global iPad base; many of those users might be keen on upgrading. The 3rd-gen model is said to be make up 19%, the 4th-gen 18%, and the Mini 17%.

hence why I said "strange" prior to problem... although on a serious note if they just stopped making 'new' iPads they could stop reducing the prices on iPad 1&2 and make more money...

So here we go- only 1/2 hr til the event.
Apple will release it's latest iterations of tablets etcetcetc . The stock will immediately crater as hedge find speculators sell off massively. The socalled analysts and business media will all announce that the tablets disappointed the market and are doomed to fail in an increasingly crowded field! The stock will begin to floor due to buybacks. Then next week the stock will either swing up slightly if Apple beats the estimates or really crater again if the miss even by a hair. Then we will get the initial reported sales that show enormous demand and the same analysts will be explains that this is really only channel fill! This cycle has become so predictable it is boring. The only way Apple can address this is to keep reducing the share count to remove the huge float available to speculation and manipulation. Only when a large majority of shares are in the hands of long term investors will this problem be resolved and normal evaluation metrics begin to apply again.

My take is that we have worn out the old road and things are different now. By that I mean that Apple is giving the manipulators plenty of ammunition to take this stock higher. I expect to see a PE of up 20:1, or approximately $800/sh by year end. Enjoy the ride.

PS: I am betting on at least $600 by year end and planning my long term Apple option strategies according to that number (April 2014 and Jan 2015). However as I see $800 or even $700 being more and more likely I will adjust strategies accordingly.
