BlackBerry suggests BBM Android/iOS downloads have topped 5M

A post on BlackBerry's (BBRY -0.1%) BBM Twitter feed indicates downloads for BBM's Android/iOS apps have passed 5M.

The apps were officially launched yesterday following delays. BBM claims ~60M users via BlackBerry hardware.

The post comes as mobile messaging giant WhatsApp announces its monthly active user base has topped 350M (up from 300M in August).

BBM will soon have a billion users... It already has 65 million installed downloads (60M on BBRY and 5M in less than 24 hours on Android & iOs).

That number is now being reported as over 10 million on Blackberry's official blog! Got to be a record.

How will it generate income for BB? If it is an expense for BB and generates nothing then who cares.

It is just a matter of weeks before BBM can surpass 350 M. The battle has just began.

Well, for one thing, BlackBerry made the apps to look like native BlackBerry, rather than native android or iPhone.

In doing so, it is a sort of preview of how the bb10 os looks. It's actually a good idea, get other users comfortable with the xbbm app on their phone, so when they get a chance to hold an actual bb10 phone they will have a better idea how to use it
Furthermore, there are the bbm channels that they could possibly make money on.

But, my opinion and thinking is that when they inked that deal with visa, perhaps they want to get bbm money or bbm wallet up and running. So once the have a half billion users, that would be a good time to launch a bbm wallet or payment system of some type.

Afterall bbm, using the most secure servers so,it would only make sense that this occurs.
Whether or not BlackBerry can pull this off or not has yet to be seen.

But the users flocking to bbm right now sure is a step in the right direction

Next steps, once the hype cools down, them boom, release and bbm Voice.

That will convince the bbm cross platform hold out to consider getting the app

It's all quite positive if you ask me

It seems they are limiting downloads to 10m per day. Africa has been delayed a week to create space.

I think they also should of put out some type of add showing what the advantages of BBM are (and there are lots of them) This would show new users the true value of BBM and would lead to many retaining and using the app, rather that deleting it. Also keep in mind they will be relasing a new version later with improvements, which will really make this BBM take off!

BBM is an Enterprise grade communication tool for the general public. Out of the many unique features, the guaranteed security and privacy are the killer advantages over the competing offers. In a world where your personal information is being whored all over the places by the FB or GOOG of the world, it feels good to know there's a place where you don't know your basic rights won't be violated. Does anybody care anymore about privacy or security?

Methinks it is appalling that press and companies have working overtime to kill this company. I firmly believe it is the "privacy" issue. They try to convince that privacy is no big deal and is forever lost. A new administration can put a stop and reverse quite nicely. BBRY is a crown jewel in this process.

10 Million new users of BBM in one day!, so soon 100 MIllion and more!
25K BES10 working perfectly installed making sure security is paramount,
70 Million very loyal users that pay millions and millions for BBM,
Z30 coming out and making users very happy,
Z10 and Q10 great tools for the educated people to use, they love them!
QNX many companies using it and growing by the day,
Not bad all delivered during the last few months!
Apart form the BOD, TH and BS, that should be replaced and have to move away, BBRY could be a very solid and successful company moving forward alone, from now on and into the future!
What we the shareholders need to do to get one emergency shareholders meeting able to remove them and put a new BOD and management persons in place to start rebuilding immediately!
We don't need PW or anybody else to take over the company at a liquidation value, what we need is the right management in place now and BBRY can rock for sure!
