More bleeding at the USPS: The nation's postal service lost $3.3B in FQ1 after weak mail volumes overran a better-than-expected holiday shipping season. Technology is the issue, according to Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe: "While it has helped us grow our Shipping Services businesses, it has had a significant negative impact on some of our much larger sources of revenue."

USPS could have digitized letter addresses a long time ago. They could have created secure email sites for certified delivery of information. They could have gone to electric vehicles for letter carriers. They could have embraced technology and innovation. Instead, they embraced their unions. So, yeh, there's a problem.

    So dumb,
we don't need junk mail 6 days a week, the post office pays over time to deliver this 3rd class mail.... why????? They pay over time at the 1st of each week and the rest of the week the carriers are dragging just to make the day last 8 hr..... Put them on a salary , cut sat delivery, and do away with upper management that does nothing to deliver the mail.... Upper management and the unions have ruined the post office......

If they go to five day delivery, the non-delivery day should be Wednesday and Sunday. This would smooth the distribution. Dropping Saturday delivery will only mean Monday would be an overtime day. Business needs to cooperate by not making Friday their heavy mailing day.
