Former Ecuadorean judge says Chevron ruling was his own work

Nov. 05, 2013 6:15 PM ETChevron Corporation (CVX) StockCVXBy: Carl Surran, SA News Editor1 Comment
  • The former Ecuadorean judge who issued a $19B pollution judgment against Chevron (NYSE:CVX) testified today in the racketeering lawsuit against U.S. lawyer Steven Donziger that he wrote the ruling alone, two weeks after another judge testified he had been paid to ghostwrite much of the decision.
  • The statements from the former judge who testified today appeared to contradict CVX's claim that the judgment was a result of fraud, but lawyers were able to hone in on several potential discrepancies in the judge's account.
  • CVX is asking U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is presiding over the trial without a jury, to prohibit Donziger and Ecuadorean villagers from collecting on the judgment in any U.S. court.
