Media giants eye 4K Ultra HD

DirecTV (DTV -1.3%) CEO Mike White thinks the rollout of 4K Ultra HD will have a material impact on the company's performance within three years.

The company is ensuring it will have the capacity to handle 4K demand as it launches new satellites.

Potential early adopters also include Netflix (NFLX -1.6%) and Comcast (CMCSA -0.1%) which have both said they would develop programming in 4K. The catch could be if consumers will be driven to new buy 4K Ultra HD TVs in droves. Remember how much-hyped 3D played out.

Even if 4K TV does catch on, and I'm not at all sure it will, it seems like a tough sell for Netflix because of the increased bandwidth for streaming.

Better color replication will yield far more palpable results with consumers. That speaks to mainstreaming of the new OLED displays from Samsung and LG, which is compatible with 4K anyway. That technology is at an inflection point, IMO: http://seekingalpha.co...

I don't really want to see all the pores of my local newscaster's nose so I'm not ecstatic about 4K but it looks like Japan is pushing 8K for the 2020 Olympics. That's 16x the video bandwidth that 1080p requires.
It may be a tough sell for Netflix in the short run but in the long run may be a blessing in disguise. Content providers currently need to provide at least 1080p-level bandwidth to people like my mom who watch 2 hours of 480i TV a year. If they have to start providing 4K, they will have to upgrade their network and it won't matter if it's for streaming or for broadcast. 4K signal to a TV will not be any less bandwidth than 4K signal to a router. There's no difference between two 4K TVs and one 4K TV + one 4K Netflix.

Now I would just love a 60" 4K TV to run all my spreadsheets on one screen. If only I could come up with the $5,000 for it.

Another trip to the store for a better TV? I will wait a couple of years.

But it is good to see that Netflix is preparing to match its competition in this matter.
