More on the Amazon/USPS deal

The service  will first launch in the NYC and L.A. metro areas before eventually reaching "a large portion of the U.S. population in 2014  including Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and Phoenix." "Millions of items" are said to be covered. (PR)

The money-losing USPS is doubtlessly happy to see the extra business, which comes at the expense of traditional Amazon (AMZN) partner UPS.

Much like last month's hiking of Amazon's free shipping minimum for non-Prime customers to $35 from $25, the deal acts as yet another inducement for Amazon customers to upgrade to Prime. It also comes as Amazon gradually rolls out its AmazonFresh same-day delivery service.

Dan Rayburn has reported hearing from an Amazon insider the e-commerce giant ended Q3 with 15M+ Prime subs.

Quite frankly, I don't like to be forced into paying for prime. Why would I when nearly every vendor I purchase from offers free shipping for Additionally, many items at amazon are fulfilled by 3p vendors and not amazon, therefore prime is not applicable and you'll still pay for shipping. I am amazed that people shop on amazon
Every item I purchase, I find elsewhere for far less than amazon and many times for 50 to 300 percent less than amazon.

"..Dan Rayburn has reported hearing from an Amazon insider the e-commerce giant ended Q3 with 15M+ Prime subs."

However, I was reading here ( ) that Netflix with 30 million US subscribers accounts for 31.62% of US downstream internet traffic while Amazon video accounts for just 1.61%, which suggest that a mere 1.5 million Amazon Prime users are streaming its video, i.e just 10% of the estimated 15 million Prime customers find the streaming video service compelling enough.

Or, perhaps could it be that the "15 million" figure is a dubious one?
