Boeing, EADS hope for split program as Lockheed zeros in on South Korean jet deal

  • Boeing (BA) and EADS (EADSF) are keeping their fingers crossed for a mixed purchase option in a $7.8B auction for South Korean fighter jets.
  • In what is now a long-running saga, BA turned in an under-budget bid in September for F-15s, but concerns over the planes' capabilities ultimately compelled South Korea to restart the auction process.
  • It now appears Lockheed Martin (LMT) is the favorite to win the auction, although the F-35's cost may still mean a split purchase is on the table.
  • A mixed purchase would give BA and EADS some hope of participating in the deal with the advanced F-15 or Eurofighter programs, respectively.
  • The terms of the auction will be settled before a November 27 Joint Chiefs of staff meeting, Reuters says, citing sources.
