Tesla Motors (TSLA -4.5%) sold off after the Street failed to be impressed by the unveiling (video) of its Model X crossover, gull-wing doors and all. The Model X, a niche product even within the luxury car market until vehicle charging stations become more widespread, won't enter production until 2013, and will carry a price tag between $50K and $75K.

i was actually impressed with the model x. i think the sell off today had more to do with the euro fears and just traders taking profits. it's really only down a little over a dollar only half erasing the gains from earlier this week. This will go back to $35 which is a low estimate and possibly hit a new high of $40 if we get good news from Greese and Obama's budget this weekend?

The idea that the price of the Model X will be between $50K and $75K is ridiculous. The minimum size battery option for this car is the 60kWh battery and drive train of the $70K Model S. Add the much larger structure, the ridiculous Falcon wing doors and you have at least another $10K. The additional 100kW (approx 133HP) electric drive train has got to cost another $10K. There is no way the 4WD version of this car will cost less than $85K (allowing for some cost savings over time) and probably much more.

Investors are not the only people unimpressed by this car. At the forums at the Tesla website even the true believers are dismayed by this car and especially the extreme non-utility effects of the gull wing doors. I won't even talk about the silly location of the (potentially dangerous) side view cameras that replace the side view mirrors.
